Dye does nothing for cleaning. It's added to colour the detergent so the product looks the way shoppers expect, which is a decision aimed at your eyes rather than your laundry. A dye-free laundry detergent leaves it out, and the wash is exactly the same without it.
Ours contains no synthetic dyes and no optical brighteners, so nothing is included for appearance. This dye-free laundry detergent runs on three surfactants including one derived from coconut, four enzymes including nuclease for body soils, and minerals for hard water and oxygen brightening. It's fragrance-free too, which makes it a dye-free laundry detergent with a short list you can read straight through.
A dye-free laundry detergent contains no added colourants. That means nothing was included to give the product a particular colour, and nothing was included to change how your fabric looks either. What it does not mean is any loss of cleaning, because dye was never doing that job.

The honest answer is consumer expectation, built up over decades. Blue reads as clean to most people, suggesting water and cool efficiency, none of which a detergent molecule actually possesses.

Dye colours the product itself. Optical brighteners are compounds that absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit it as visible blue light, so fabric appears brighter under daylight. They are designed to remain on clothing after washing. Neither removes anything from the fabric.
A dye-free laundry detergent addresses the first. Ours leaves out the second as well, so nothing is included to change how fabric appears rather than how clean it is.
Once you take away the colour, what remains is the part that was always doing the work, and it is unglamorous by comparison.
Surfactants lift oil and dirt off fabric by bridging oil and water, which is how the broad layer of everyday grime is removed. Enzymes dismantle specific stain types at a molecular level. Oxygen from sodium percarbonate works on the chemical bonds that make stains visible, so a stain stops showing rather than being scrubbed out. Minerals manage water conditions so all of it can function, especially in hard water.
None of that produces a visual shortcut. It removes the soil, which is what you were buying detergent for in the first place.
Strip out the colorant and nothing about how a dye-free laundry detergent cleans changes, which is easiest to see by looking at what is actually in the box.
Three surfactants lift oil and dirt: sodium coco-sulfate, alkyl glucoside and potassium cocoate, the coconut-derived one of the group.
Four enzymes handle specific stains. Protease dismantles protein soils like grass and sweat. Amylase breaks down starches, which matters extra because starch can act as an adhesive holding other soil in place. Mannanase deals with the gum thickeners used in foods and cosmetics. Nuclease, newer and still uncommon, targets nucleic acids in body soils and biofilms, breaking down the residue that keeps sweat and skin oils bound to fabric and contributes to dingy yellow buildup.
The minerals do the brightening and water work. Sodium percarbonate releases oxygen that acts on the chemical bonds making stains visible, which is real brightening rather than a visual effect, and TAED keeps it going at lower temperatures. Sodium carbonate raises alkalinity, sodium borate and sodium citrate improves hard water performance.
The check is quick once you know the vocabulary. Look for the words colourant or dye, for CI followed by five digits, and for colour names in the Acid Blue or Basic Violet families.
Colourant molecules are also identified differently across industries, which is why the same substance can appear under several names. Brilliant Blue FCF, for example, is FD&C Blue No. 1 in American food, E133 in Europe, CI 42090 in the international Colour Index and Acid Blue 9 in non-food contexts. Four names, one molecule. A dye-free laundry detergent sidesteps the whole naming puzzle by containing none of them.
Half a tablespoon per standard load, one tablespoon for heavily soiled or extra-large loads. The powder is concentrated, so that small amount is the full dose rather than a starting point.
Add it directly to the washer drum before your laundry, then wash according to the care instructions on your clothing. Standard and HE machines both work, cold cycles are fine and hard water is covered by the mineral blend. Not for use on silk or wool.
Using more will not brighten anything. Brightening comes from the oxygen in the formula, and excess detergent only adds residue.
If dye and optical brighteners are off the table, brightening has to come from somewhere real, and it does.
